Current Focus: Effects of Heat Stress on Blood Metabolites and Milk Quality in Lactating Holstein and Jersey Cows

Project Description

This project evaluates the effect of heat stress, caused by the naturally occurring weather conditions of Tennessee, on milk quality and blood metabolites in dairy cows. Previous studies have shown that heat stress has negative impact on milk production. This project aims to uncover the root of this decline in production by observing for changes in milk quality and changes in nutrient utilization.

Why does this topic interest you?

I am interested in studying how everyday management practices can affect the health of animals. With this knowledge, we can work to implement management and husbandry practices that support the overall health of animals in human care.

What are your professional aspirations?

I hope to become a veterinarian. This profession is full of the same type of problem solving needed to succeed in a research setting. I hope to use the skills I have learned during my project to identify and fix problems relating to animal health.
