Current Focus: Molecular Ecology of Harmful Algal Blooms

Project Description

I am using PCR and qPCR to identify eDNA of toxin-producing cyanobacteria (Microcysistis spp.). The main toxin of interest is a hepatotoxin called Microcystin. This data is compared with toxin levels and other water quality parameters to try to predict when blooms will occur and how extensive they are. These methods can be used to determine the of microcystin (is it produced at this site or flowing from another) and what causes cyanobacteria cell numbers to spike.

Why does this topic interest you?

I have always been interested in ecological research. What I like about molecular ecology is it allows me to investigate the hidden biodiversity of microbes and allelic diversity that aren’t apparent to the naked eye. I also want the research I do to have an impact on the environment and society. The site where I conduct fieldwork (Walter Hill Dam) is a recreational area where people both swim and fish. Therefore, the presence of microcystin producing cyanobacteria is a very pertinent issue for environmental safety.

What are your professional aspirations?

I want to pursue research on the PhD level in molecular ecology. I am very interested in techniques like eDNA sampling and population genetics to study wildlife populations as they give a huge amount datum without the need to harm the organism or put it under unnecessary stress. This is very important for studying invasive and endangered species to track their health.

Do you have any advice for future researchers?

Do not be afraid to branch out and try research areas that may be different from your main research goals. Use the time while you are an undergrad to get lots of experience in a range of areas. You may find you enjoy research in an area you may have never considered.
